INTERGRATING WITH FORD DIESEL ENGINES 6.9/7.3 IDI & 7.3 Powerstroke Turbo Diesel
20th Mar 2025
Are you working on a Ford diesel truck and need more info on how to calibrate and wire up your tach signal as well as how to hook up the rest of your install?
PLUGGING IN:
This is as easy as it gets, before we get ahead or ourselves start by plugging into the appropriate ports:
All 5 and 6-guage kits with OLED screens are plugged in the exact same way across the product line. You'll also notice that the sender/function wire is on the same gauge that the 2" gauge is plugged into. (Green fuel sender wire on speedo, fuel gauge plugs into speedo). The plugs and wiring are not interchangeable on the speedo and tach (you can't plug the volt gauge into the speedo for example, it will think its something else)
SPEEDO:
FUEL: B PORT
WATER TEMP: C PORT
NOT USED: D PORT: This means it not used
TACH:
VOLTS: B PORT
OIL PRESS: D PORT
C PORT: NOT USED
IDENTIFYING YOUR ENGINE
Depending on the age of your vehicle there is a few different ways that the tach signal is output to your gauge, or maybe your vehicle never was equipped from the factory.
- 6.9L IDI: This engine was produced from 1983 until 1987.
- 7.3L IDI: The 7.3L IDI, which was a larger version of the 6.9L, was introduced in 1988 and continued to be produced until 1993.
- Powerstroke: In 1993, Ford introduced a turbocharged version of the 7.3L IDI, which was the predecessor to the first-generation 7.3L Powerstroke turbo-diesel engine, which was produced from 1994 to 1998.
80-91 Trucks: Tach signal is output via the crank position sensor mounted at the front of the engine, with earlier trucks having the signal go directly to the dash.
92 & UP: sent this signal to the computer and then up to the factory gauge cluster.

Where to hook your signal on your NVU Diesel Tach (Also includes testing for proper signal voltage)
NVU's Diesel Tachometer uses the ORANGE wire as its TACH SIGNAL INPUT, depending on the year of your truck earlier models from 80 through 91 will take the tax signal directly via the sensor on the engine. One wire of the sending unit will act as the ground while the other wire will produce the signal up to the gauge so be aware when wiring this up to make sure that the signal side is fed to the gauges orange wire as we mentioned above.

How to set your Tachometer PPR (pulse per revolution)
80-92: 6.9 IDI output is 53 PPR
93-UP PowerStroke outputs 12 PPR
In order to set your manual calibration, simply hold your programming button in before applying power to the gauges.
This will get you into the gauges setup menu, from there you will see an option called Manual Calibration, hold in the programming switch for 3 seconds to enter the manual calibration function, using the push button click until you have the appropriate PPR set in this case you'll want to read out two show 053, hold the button in for 3 seconds to save and confirm this setting and you'll have a working tachometer!
